Who is Yoga Guru BKS Iyengar and why Google Doodle celebrates his efforts?

Today, Google has dedicated one of its signature doodles to commemorate the efforts of BKS Iyengar (it’s his 97th Birthday today), who discovered the style of yoga known as ‘Iyengar yoga’.

BKS Iyengar, whose complete name is Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, was born in 1918 into a Sri Vaishnava Iyengar family in Bellur, Karnataka, India – one of 13 children, of whom only 10 survived.

Iyengar was awarded some of the highest civilian awards in India, the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2014. In 2004, Shri BKS  Iyengar was also named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. At Hawkfeed, we would be more than happy to tell you about his Guru, Shri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya who is known as ‘father of modern Yoga’ who made what BKS Iyengar is known for. Iyengar paid respect to his Guru throughout his life, no matter how much fame he earned and that’s what you call a real Hindu who always respects his Gurus (Teachers).

BK S Iyengar made Yoga famous overseas. In childhood, he became very weak due to illness. But then he started to practice yoga to maintain his health and eventually gave yoga a new definition. He uprooted the Patanjali Yoga Sutra and made “Iyengar Yoga”. He died at the age of 95. However, even at the age of 95, he could perform Sirsasana for 30 minutes, which is a very difficult Asana of Yoga. He also trained the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin on Yoga. Because of Yoga, he remained fit even after suffering two major Heart attacks.

B K S Iyengar  spread the message of yoga to atleast 70 countries . His Book ‘Light on Yoga (1966) was the sum of the Bible said. The book has been translated into 19 languages. The book sold 30 million copies.
